Special inspections are inspection of selected materials, equipment, installation, fabrication, erection or placement of components and connections, to ensure compliance with approved construction documents and referenced standards as required by referenced standards (BC 1702.1). Special inspections are performed by Special Inspectors on behalf of registered Special Inspection Agencies (SIAs).
NYC DOB Special Inspections are mandatory, focused reviews required by the New York City Department of Buildings during the construction or alteration of a building. They verify that critical structural, fire safety, and mechanical work is installed correctly and complies with the NYC Building Code and approved design plans.
Special Inspections are not conducted by standard city DOB inspectors. Instead, they must be performed by qualified Special Inspectors who work for independent, DOB-registered Special Inspection Agencies (SIAs).
